Boxelder Trees

boxelder tree 1

Boxelder trees are one of the trees that can claim native status to our home state of Utah! Boxelders in general average about 45 feet high and can be up to 24 inches in diameter. The Boxelder tree we find here in Utah is widely distributed through the USA. Although Boxelders can grow in a wide variety of soil they prefer moist soil, well drained that has a medium to rocky makeup.

The Boxelder grows rapidly resulting in brittle wood when it reaches maturity. Things that can affect the health of a Boxelder are heart rot, fire, and insects. Boxelder trees are often infested with Boxelder bugs which eat the tree but rarely are the cause of death.

The Native Americans would use the knots found on the tree to make things like bows, pipe stems and drums. They used the inner bark as a medicine. When boiled and consumed, resulted in vomiting.

Although Boxelders do not require much water or everyday care, pruning your tree is essential to its health and the health of your house, cars, and neighborhood! There is nothing worse than a tree branch falling on your loved ones or loved possessions! If you think you’ve got a tree which may have diseased branches, call us to take a look. There is nothing we love more than keeping your trees healthy!
